Professor Helen Chan's research interests focus on end-of-life care, gerontology as well as care ethics. She has conducted a number of research projects on promoting palliative and end-of-life care, especially advance care planning, among older adults and people with advanced progressive diseases. She received Young Investigator Awards at the 5th Hong Kong Palliative Care Symposium in 2008 and at the 19th Hong Kong International Cancer Congress in 2012 in recognition of her outstanding research capabilities.

Currently, Professor Chan is an editorial board member of Asian Journal of Gerontology and Geriatrics and Journal of Nursing Ethics. She is also a co-opt member at the Education Subcommittee of the Nursing Council of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Association of Gerontology, and has been appointed as the Honorary Advisor of Elderly Service (End-of-life care) for the Hong Kong Young Women's Christian Association and the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation.
