Patient safety: Medication error reduction solutions
Ms Kris O’Shea
Clinical Transformation Officer of Wellspan Health, New York
Vice-President of Patient Care of Gettysburg Hospital, Gettyburg, PA

Ensuring patient safety and improving clinical care are major areas of focus for most hospitals. It is a global trend to promote safe and reliable healthcare practices. Nursing leaders must seek the tools necessary to reliably prevent medication errors. Smart pump technology offers significant error prevention; however, by leveraging the power of the electronic health record, it is possible to further reduce medication errors. In fact, by creating an interface between the smart pump and the electronic record, it is possible to autoprogram smart pumps and assure nearly error free care.

New technology advancements with infusion devices such as safety software, wireless communications, bar-code scanning, real-time benchmark reporting, and integration to clinical information systems have contributed to improving care. Come and hear how one hospital has innovated to create bi-directional interfaces between the smart pump and the electronic health record to facilitate safer care. The Hospira lunch session will discuss these new technology advances as one solution to medication error and leading to clinical impact, workflow streamlining and potential workload reduction for nursing staff.
