GIVING TO CUHK NURSING

This July was an exciting month for our School as we had the pleasure of hosting several international visitors! The highlight was the visit of our Distinguished Visiting Scholar, Prof. Linda JOHNSTON, Dean and Professor of Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto, Canada. During her stay, Prof. JOHNSTON shared her expertise, experiences, and insights through a series of thought-provoking seminars/lectures (see recap below) and provided invaluable academic/research consultations for our staff. We also welcomed 15 enthusiastic potential applicants from abroad for our PhD Summer Workshop, which could enrich the diversity and global outlook of our research community.

Alongside our increased engagement with incoming scholars and researchers, our outbound academic activities have been in full swing, particularly with our staff and students actively participating in overseas conferences, academic visits, and clinical practicums. These in-person/on-site activities helped expand our global networks and bring plenty of opportunities to collaborate with worldwide scholars and leaders, enabling us to learn from each other to address global health challenges.

Virtual components will remain complementary to face-to-face activities for networking, knowledge-sharing and capacity-building. For instance, the recent Professional Development Seminar held by our Y. K. Pao Foundation Centre for Nursing Excellence in Chronic Illness Care (CIC Centre) (see recap below) is a prominent example of how we leverage the hybrid delivery mode to facilitate high-level exchanges with overseas guest speakers.

There will be an exciting line-up of events ahead, such as our hosting of the highly anticipated Nursing Symposium on Cancer Care in 2024 and planned collaborations with world-renowned scholars to work on research projects and high-quality outputs. I look forward to continuously working in unity with our international and local partners to extend the impacts of research and education on the global stage!

DISTINGUISHED VISITING
SCHOLAR’S VISIT
(10–28 JULY 2023)

Prof. Linda JOHNSTON delivered three Lunch Seminars ( Seminar I, Seminar II, Seminar III ) and an Open Lecture during her visit, covering various strategies in pursuing educational and research excellence. Her enlightening presentations have equipped us to potentially advance our QS rankings, succeed in the upcoming Research Assessment Exercise, and embrace educational, research and healthcare challenges and opportunities ahead. Big thanks to Prof. JOHNSTON and we look forward to her next visit in 2024!

PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR
(24 JUNE 2023)

The annual Professional Development Seminar by our CIC Centre, featuring lectures and forum discussions led by our academic staff and two distinguished guest speakers from Australia, Prof. Raymond CHAN (Flinders University) and Prof. Stephen JAN (University of New South Wales), was an insightful experience broadening participants’ knowledge and perspectives on health equity in chronic illness care.
