Welcome to the CUHK Nethersole School of Nursing website! This website presents a clear picture of our School including our history, mission and the latest development.

Our School is the first university department of nursing in Hong Kong. Since its inception in 1991, the School has been striving to excel in teaching and research and in the promotion of the highest standards of nursing practice. We have a strong profile of staff; and it is our shared goal and commitment to helping our students pursue their nursing dreams, and fostering nurse leaders for the community and for tomorrow.

I am glad that our School’s excellence and success in offering world-class nursing education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels are locally and internationally recognised. According to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018 – Nursing, our School is the 1st in Hong Kong, 3rd in Asia, and 29th in the world. Locally, we are the first nursing school admitting PhD students via the highly competitive Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme; and have successfully admitted seven students via this scheme since 2012. Our flagship programme, Bachelor of Nursing, has remained the largest nursing programme funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC) in the territory with the highest average admission score since 1995. Besides, our Bachelor of Science in Gerontology is the first UGC-funded gerontology programme in Hong Kong.

Over the years, the School has been going from strength to strength. Currently, we have more than 1,800 students enrolling in our undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes, and around 140 staff members. Thanks for the unfailing support of our local, mainland and overseas partners, we have been able to offer extensive clinical learning and overseas exchange opportunities to our students. They also have ample opportunities to work collaboratively with experts from a variety of disciplines within our University as well as in an inter-university or a community context.

As a leading nursing institution in Hong Kong and in Asia, our School’s cutting-edge research is also highly regarded. Our research findings have significantly contributed to generating new knowledge to inform nursing practice, advancing nursing sciences and promoting healthcare development in Hong Kong. We also strongly encourage our research postgraduate students, the potential researchers, to participate in research projects undertaking in the School to strengthen their research capacities.

The School continues to play an active role in the international nursing community. Through extending links and collaborations with mainland and overseas universities as well as hosting international conferences and symposiums, we pool the efforts of colleagues from around the world to promote professionalism in nursing and the betterment of global health. We successfully organised the 6th Pan-Pacific Nursing Conference and 1st Colloquium on Chronic Illness Care in 2016, and the 8th Nursing Symposium on Cancer Care in 2018. Both events were overwhelmingly participated by hundreds of health and social care delegates from around the world.
