Director's Message

Director Sek Ying CHAIR

Welcome to the CUHK Nethersole School of Nursing website! This website presents a clear picture of our School including our history, mission and the latest development.

Our School is the first university department of nursing in Hong Kong. Since its inception in 1991, the School has been striving to excel in teaching and research and in the promotion of the highest standards of nursing practice. We have a strong profile of staff; and it is our shared goal and commitment to helping our students pursue their nursing dreams, and fostering nurse leaders for the community and for tomorrow.

I am glad that our School’s excellence and success in offering world-class nursing education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels are locally and internationally recognized. According to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017 – Nursing, our School is the 1st in Hong Kong, 3rd in Asia, and 27th in the world. Locally, we are the first nursing school admitting PhD students via the highly competitive Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme; and have successfully admitted four students via this scheme since 2012. Our flagship programme, Bachelor of Nursing, has remained the largest nursing programme funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC) in the territory with the highest average admission GPA since 1995. Besides, our Bachelor of Science in Gerontology is the first UGC-funded gerontology programme in Hong Kong.

Over the years, the School has been going from strength to strength. Currently, we have more than 1,800 students including over 1,200 undergraduates and 600 postgraduates, and around 140 staff members. Thanks for the unfailing support of our local, mainland and overseas partners, we have been able to offer extensive clinical learning and overseas exchange opportunities to our students. They also have ample opportunities to work collaboratively with experts from a variety of disciplines within our University as well as in an inter-university or a community context.

As a leading nursing institution in Hong Kong and in Asia, our School’s cutting-edge research is also highly regarded. Our research findings have significantly contributed to generating new knowledge to inform nursing practice, advancing nursing sciences and promoting healthcare development in Hong Kong. We also strongly encourage our research postgraduate students, the potential researchers, to participate in research projects currently undertaking in the School to strengthen their research capacities.

The School continues to play an active role in the international nursing community. Through extending links and collaborations with mainland and overseas universities as well as hosting international conferences and seminars, we pool the efforts of colleagues from around the world to promote professionalism in nursing and the betterment of global health. We successfully organized the Sixth Pan-Pacific Nursing Conference and First Colloquium on Chronic Illness Care in March 2016, which was overwhelmingly participated by more than 500 health and social care delegates from 20 countries and over 800 nursing and gerontology students.

We jubilantly celebrated our School’s 25th Anniversary in 2016, and the above conference was one of our key events to celebrate this important milestone. Another key event was the Community Caring Day cum CUHK Nethersole School of Nursing Alumni Carnival held in October. With an aim to promote compassionate care for elders and to motivate our alumni and students to contribute their expertise to serve the elders, the carnival drew a huge crowd of 1,400 participants including over 500 elders and 700 alumni and their families. Other celebratory activities included photo competition, gala dinner, etc. Please visit our website and Facebook to recapture the happy moments of these activities.

Happy browsing and sharing our passion for nursing!
