Ocamp Opening Ceremony 2017 - Sharing from the Nethersole Institute of Continuing Holistic Health Education

Ms. Esther Yiu, Associate Director and Ms. Wai-ching Tung, Senior Education & Project Officer of the Nethersole Institute of Continuing Holistic Health Education (NICHE) were invited to participate in our BN & BScG Ocamp Opening Ceremony on 16 August 2017. During the ceremony, they shared the history of the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation and development of the health care system in Hong Kong. We hope our freshmen can inherit the Nethersole spirit to provide holistic care with compassionate love.

More than 250 freshmen, students and teachers participated in the BN & BScG Ocamp Opening Ceremony at William M.W. Mong Engineering Building on 16 August 2017. Thanks go to Ka-man Tam, Lai-kin Wong and Hei-yiu Ma for leading 29 Organising Committee Members and 118 Executive Committee Members to successfully organise such a great Opening Ceremony. 7 teachers also joined the ceremony to support and welcome the freshmen to our family. The Opening Ceremony marked the start of the Ocamp. Enjoy and have fun!

Bachelor of Nursing Programme Buddy Scheme Session 2017-18

A sharing session on the Buddy Scheme was successfully held for this year’s senior year intake students of our Bachelor of Nursing Programme on 11 August 2017. This scheme aims at offering them with peer support in adaption to the university life. This year eight students (admitted via senior year intakes), including Grace Wing-yan Chan, Yan-ling Cheng, Yu-hin Chong, Siu-to Suen, Yi-ting Yiu, Tsz-ling Lam, Wai-ting Ng and Wing-yan Wong, were recruited as buddies to share their learning experience and campus life with the senior freshmen.

Dr. WANG Qun won the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation in Behavioral Health Award 2017 by the Hong Kong Society of Behavioral Health

Congratulations to Dr. WANG Qun, our 2015 PhD in Nursing graduate (admitted via the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme) and currently the School’s Postdoctoral Fellow, for winning the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation in Behavioural Health Award 2017.  The award was established by the Hong Kong Society of Behavioural Health in 2015  to recognise the importance of behavioural health research and to encourage young researchers to engage in behavioural health research. Submitted dissertations are judged mainly on their contribution to behavioural health, in addition to originality of work, significance and implications of results, clarity of presentation and quality of writing. The award is presented to a maximum of two applicants per year.

Orientation Day of Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) Programme 2017

The Orientation Day for the Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) Programme was held on 7 August 2017 to welcome the 77 new students to our family. Our School Director Prof. Sek-ying Chair delivered a welcoming speech and introduced the School to the students; and the Programme Director Prof. Janet Sit, along with the Year Coordinators, gave a detailed overview of the programme. The students not only had the opportunity to meet their classmates, but also their teachers to facilitate their first contact.

Student Exchange: La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia from July to August 2017

5 Bachelor of Nursing Year 2 & 3 students participated in the summer exchange programme to the La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia from 30 July to 5 August 2017. During the exchange, they attended workshops with local students and visited the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and were impressed by their interactive learning approach. The students have enriched their learning experiences and developed cross-cultural insights through sharing with teachers and students from the host institution on local health care systems and nursing education.

A total of thirty-five secondary students participated in the CUHK Summer Institute and visited our School on 17 and 25 July 2017. Through attending classes and visiting our laboratory, they deepened their understanding of our Bachelor of Nursing Programme and gained a first-hand university experience. Inbound Student Exchange: Holy Angel University, the Philippines in July 2017

Twelve PhD in Nursing Education students led by Prof. Al D. Biag, Dean of College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences of the Holy Angel University, the Philippines visited our school on 6 July 2017. During the visit, they met with our PhD students to share the campus life in both regions.

Hua Xia Foundation Workshop for Mainland Nursing Academics 2017

The “Hua Xia Foundation Workshop for Mainland Nursing Academics 2017” jointly organized by the Hua Xia Foundation and the Nethersole School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong was successfully held on 19-23 June 2017. A total of thirty nursing school heads and senior faculty members from different provinces of mainland China gathered in Hong Kong to participate in this workshop. Our School has arranged a series of seminar presentations and discussions for the participants to learn about the healthcare system, specialty nursing development and tertiary education management in Hong Kong. Besides, visits to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, Haven of Hope Nursing Home, Kwai Tsing Safe Community and Healthy City Association. were also arranged for the participants to have a better understanding of the health and community care services in Hong Kong. These visits also provided a valuable opportunity for the participants to share views and experiences with local professionals, contributing to the health and community care development in mainland China and Hong Kong.

Professor Ruth Taylor-Piliae from the University of Arizona, USA visited our School in June 2017. During her visit, she delivered seminars to our staff and students to share her experience in prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases. Her valuable sharing definitely benefited our staff and students in conducting health care research and writing research proposals.

5 Bachelor of Nursing students participated in the exchange programme to the Wakayama Medical University, Japan from 18 to 24 June 2017. During the exchange, they attended classes with local students, and visited the university hospital, emergency medical services as well as aged care institutions. The students have enriched their learning experiences and developed cross-cultural insights through sharing with teachers and students from the host institution on local health care systems and nursing education.

Prof. Patricia Davidson, Dean of School of Nursing of the Johns Hopkins University, USA visited our School from 16 to 20 June 2017, and delivered a seminar themed ‘Surviving and thriving in an academic career’, and a lecture themed ‘Climate change and nursing’ respectively to our staff and students. Her valuable sharing helped our staff and students plan their academic career, and enhanced their understanding of the impact of climate change on health care outcomes.

Prof. Roger Watson, Professor of Nursing of the University of Hull, UK and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Advanced Nursing visited our School, and delivered a seminar themed ‘From results to publication’ to our staff and students on 15 June 2017. Our staff and students enhanced their understanding of the trends, standards and issues about publishing nursing research via his valuable sharing.

Prof. Barbara Riegel visited the School from 5 to 7 June 2017. During her visit, she delivered a research seminar on ‘Palliative Care in Cardiac Patients’ to share her experience and insights with our academic staff and students.

Graduation Ceremony 2016-17 for our Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration), Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Gerontology programmes was held at Chung Chi College Chapel, The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 31 May 2017. The School has a total of 342 students graduating this year, including 67 Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration), 247 Bachelor of Nursing and 28 Bachelor of Science in Gerontology students. They are going to enter the nursing profession and elderly care field, as well as inherit our spirit of compassion care to serve the community. We wish them every success in the future!
