Four faculty members from the University of Phayao, Thailand visited our School on 11 July 2018. During the visit, they met with our School Director and professor to explore opportunities for future collaborations, visited our teaching laboratory and shared nursing education experience between the two places.

Congratulations for passing the PhD Viva Exam!

PhD Viva Exam was successfully completed on 29 June!  This year we have seven students passing the exam. They are Christina SONG, Dorothy CHAN, Yang LEI, Xingfeng YU, Rebecca PANG, Jojo KWOK and Olivia QIU – Well-done and congratulations! Their dedication and hard work over the years has been well rewarded!!
After the exam, teachers and classmates joined the celebrations to share this joyful and memorable moment with the students! Wishing them all the best for their future career!

Meeting with Nethersole Alumni

Chief Executive Officer of Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation (Mr. Christopher So), Chairperson of the Nethersole School of Nursing Alumni (Ms. Amy Cheng), Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the CUHK Nursing Alumni Association (Mr. Jeremy Lam & Ms. Wendy Yip), and several local nurse leaders (Ms. Mandy Ip & Mr. Ken Ching) gathered at our School today (27 June) to attend a meeting convened by Prof. Janita Chau and Prof. Iris Lee. During the meeting, all members discussed actively to explore how Nethersole alumni could be effectively motivated to support our nursing students and graduates, helping them to better understand what nurses do in real clinical settings to ensure their smooth transition into professional nurses upon graduation. 

Thanks to all external colleagues for attending the meeting amidst their very busy work schedules!

Prof. Linda Sarna’s Visit

Prof. Linda Sarna, Dean of UCLA School of Nursing, USA visited our School from 26 to 29 June 2018. During the visit, she delivered a public lecture to share her Tobacco Free Nurses experience in promoting the leadership role of nurses in tobacco control, particularly in using science to change practice and policy; and a research seminar to introduce to our staff and students about strategies for developing an international program of nursing research. She met with our School Director and professors to explore opportunities for future collaborations.

Stroke Prevention Bus Parade

The Kowloon East Cluster, Hospital Authority organised a stroke prevention bus parade on 16 June to enhance stroke awareness in the community. The bus visited ten housing estates in Kwun Tong and Tseung Kwan O. Prof. Janita Chau of our School was invited as an officiating guest performing the ribbon-cutting to kick off the event. Four students from our Bachelor of Nursing Programme and two students from our Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) Programme participated as volunteers to promote the importance of stroke prevention and present souvenirs to the residents.

Prof. Polly Li, Assistant Professor of the School, attended the opening ceremony of the Care For Your Heart (CFYH) in Central on 15 June. During the event, she shared with the media about the School’s first research project in collaboration with CFYH examining the use an innovative approach to promote timely care-seeking for individuals with a high risk of acute myocardial infarction.

Prof. Charlotte Clarke, Head of the School of Health in Social Science and International Dean for the College of Humanities and Social Science, The University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom was invited to visit our School between 4 and 7 June. During her visit, our postgraduate students presented their research studies and had in-depth discussion with Prof. Clarke in a fruitful way.

Graduation Ceremony 2017-18

Congratulations! The School has a total of 357 students graduating this year, including 84 Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration), 245 Bachelor of Nursing and 28 Bachelor of Science in Gerontology students, and the Graduation Ceremony for these students was held at Chung Chi College Chapel, CUHK on 30 May. With guests, nursing professionals and academic staff joining the ceremony to share the happiness with the students, we wish them every success in the future!

Prof. Frank Kee, Clinical Professor, School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences from Queen’s University Belfast, United Kingdom has been invited to visit our School between 30 and 31 May. During his visit, our postgraduate students presented their research studies and had in-depth discussion with Prof. Frank Kee in a fruitful way.

CUHK Diabetes Prevention Day

The Community Health and Medication-safety Promotion Inter-school Outreach Network (CU CHAMPION) and the ‘PREVENT.DM’ organised the CUHK Diabetes Prevention Day at Yasumoto International Academic Park, CUHK on 25 – 26 May. 59 students from different health disciplines within the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK, including students from the Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Science in Public Health, Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences programmes, and 27 Bachelor of Nursing students and 5 Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) students, volunteered for this two-day event. Through thematic seminars, dancing exercise demonstration and diabetes risk assessment, over 800 participants learnt the tips for preventing diabetes to promote the importance of disease prevention over cure.

Dr. Jackie Robinson’s Visit

Dr. Jackie Robinson, Senior Lecturer, School of Nursing, University of Auckland, New Zealand visited our School from 23 May to 29 May. During her visit, she delivered a research seminar to our staff and students to share research work of the Te Arai Palliative Care and End of Life Research Group, and met with our School Director and professor to explore opportunities for future collaborations.

One Day Stay
17 May, 2018

With an aim to help S.6 students to get familiar with the nursing profession, our Bachelor of Nursing Programme and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, our School held a One Day Stay for S.6 students on 17 May. Fifty S.6 students attended a lecture to learn basic nursing knowledge and the duties of a nurse, followed by a lab practice session on intravenous therapy and injection guided by our teachers and student ambassadors.

Congratulations to Ms. Jenniffer Torralba Paguio, our PhD Year 1 student admitted via the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, on winning the Best Poster Presentation Award(Champion) in the Research Poster Exhibition organised by the CUHK Library on 16 May!

Visit to Caritas Kwun Tong Elderly Centre

To promote the importance of a balanced diet and personal hygiene to the older people, eleven nursing student volunteers visited the Caritas Kwun Tong Elderly Centre on 16 May, which was organised by the Lee Woo Sing College Nursing Society. Our students shared tips for a healthy lifestyle with around twenty senior citizens through mass games and talk, including the correct handwashing technique and nutritive value of fruits and vegetables, and presented healthy gift packs to all older people. Special thanks to the Caritas Kwun Tong Elderly Centre for their support to our students in this activity!

Mr. Marques Ng received Fulbright-Lee Hysan Research Scholar Award

Mr. Marques Ng, our Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Year 3 student, received Fulbright-Lee Hysan Research Scholar Award offered by the U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong and Macau, which will support him to undertake symptom management research at School of Nursing, University of California, San Francisco, USA as a visiting scholar for six months.

2018 International Nurses Day (IND) Celebration Dinner

International Nurses Day is celebrated every year around the world on 12 May, the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale; and this year’s theme is ‘Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Health is a Human Right’. Our teachers and students actively participated in the International Nurses Day Celebration Dinner organised by the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing at the Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre on 12 May to celebrate the notable contribution of nurses to the local and global health.

Scholarships and Awards Presentation Ceremony 2017-18

This year’s Scholarships and Awards Presentation Ceremony was successfully completed on 11 May. This year, over 210 participants attended the ceremony to celebrate this joyful occasion, including thirteen distinguished guests, staff, students and their families and friends.

The Best Teacher Awards were presented to eight teaching staff with outstanding teaching performance in 2016-17, including Prof. Doris Yu, Prof. Helen Chan, Prof. Winnie So, Prof. Polly Li, Prof. Jojo Wong, Mr. Summer Ha, Dr. Fiona Tang, and Dr. Philip Hung. A total of 112 scholarships and awards were also presented to 108 postgraduate students to recognise their excellent academic achievements in 2016-17 or upon their admission to the School. The School would also like to extend our gratitude to our donors for their unfailing support over the years.

Teaching and Learning Seminar: Workshop on Mental Health First Aid to Promote Student Wellness

Dr. Ada Yuen, Assistant Director of Office of Student Affairs, CUHK, and our Assistant Professor Prof. Ho Yu Cheng delivered a seminar themed ‘Workshop on mental health first aid to promote student wellness’ to our teaching staff on 11 May 2018. In the workshop, they discussed different ways to manage mental health problems for students, and our teaching staff also actively practised mental health first aid skills to enrich their professional knowledge.

Ms. Yunhong Liu received The New Researcher Award (Postgraduate) and Best Student Oral Presentation Award

Congratulations to Ms. Yunhong Liu, our Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Year 2 student, on winning two awards! She received The New Researcher Award (Postgraduate) for her outstanding academic performance in 2016-17 from the School at the Scholarships and Awards Presentation Ceremony 2017-18 on 11 May; and the Best Student Oral Presentation Award at the 8th Nursing Symposium on Cancer Care organised by the School on 24-25 May.
