Our Bachelor of Nursing graduate Mr. Ralph Lee has been appointed as Director of University Safety, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He visited the School and met with Prof. Sek-ying Chair, Prof. Carmen Chan, Prof. Doris Yu and Prof. Janita Chau to exchange their experiences and insights into office and laboratory safety, and safety legislation. Mr. Lee will deliver safety seminars to our staff and students.

Inbound Student Exchange: Xiang Ya School of Nursing, Central South University, Mainland in November 2017

Seventeen undergraduate nursing students led by four teachers from the Xiang Ya School of Nursing, Central South University, Mainland China visited our School from 20 to 22 November 2017. During the visit, they attended classes with our students, visited our laboratories and joined a campus tour to experience campus life in CUHK.

Our Bachelor of Nursing graduate, Hong Kong long-distance runner and the Hong Kong representative of Rio Olympic Women's Marathon Ms. Christy Kit-ching Yiu was invited by the Lee Woo Sing College to be the guest speaker of the College Assembly on 10 November, and share her experience from a nurse to a long-distance runner. She had great enthusiasm for running after graduation, and continued to achieve breakthroughs, devoting herself to marathon training and her Olympic dream. Although she suffered setbacks and injuries many times, she strove for her goal courageously. Her inspiring sharing encouraged the students to challenge themselves and fulfil their dreams bravely.

Prof. Scott Sheppard, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International & Development) and Ms. Elsie Wong, Engagement Manager (Hong Kong) from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia visited our School on 9 November 2017 to have insightful sharing on academic and student exchange. 

To further strengthen collaboration between the two universities, a Memorandum of Understanding between the Nethersole School of Nursing, CUHK and the School of Nursing, QUT will be established.

Establishment of the Mr. Butt Cheuk Ming Memorial Scholarship and Butt Teaching and Learning Grant for Nursing

The School received a donation of HK$2.525 million from Late Ms. Wai-king Butt to establish the Mr. Butt Cheuk Ming Memorial Scholarship, and Butt Teaching and Learning Grant for Nursing in memory of her father Mr. Cheuk-ming Butt. The cheque was presented to our School Director Prof. Sek-ying Chair by Ms. Wai-woo Butt on behalf of her late sister.

The scholarship will be presented to our Bachelor of Nursing Year 1 students with outstanding admission results; while the grant aims to support teaching development of the School. The School would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for the generous donation!

Academic Scholar: Prof. Anne Chang, School of Nursing, Queensland University of Technology, Australia

Prof. Anne Chang from the School of Nursing, Queensland University of Technology, Australia visited our School from 7 to 10 November 2017. She delivered lectures and a seminar during her visit. She met with our postgraduate students, and provided feedback on nine students’ research projects through their poster presentation. Two consultation sessions were also held, and our students and staff took this invaluable opportunity to discuss their research projects in detail with her.

Through her invaluable sharing, our staff and students enhanced their understanding of frontier research in evidence-based practice and fostered insightful exchange, which would greatly benefit their work.

Graduation Ceremony of the Professional Diploma Programme in Advanced Nursing Practice 2017

Graduation Ceremony of the Professional Diploma Programme in Advanced Nursing Practice 2017 was held at Cheng Yu Tung Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 4 November 2017. We had a total of 116 graduates and 120 family members attending the Graduation Ceremony to celebrate this memorable occasion. Our Guest of Honour Dr. Wai-lun Cheung, JP delivered a speech to encourage our graduates to strive for excellence in nursing services, and stressed the importance of mentoring junior nurses. Our graduates have further developed specialty knowledge and skills to contribute to the nursing services, and are going to assume leadership and management roles in hospitals or other healthcare settings. We wish them all the best in the future!

Each of our Bachelor of Science in Gerontology (BScG) Year 1 students was presented with a BScG badge for wearing during the gerontological practicum and exchange programmes, so as to symbolise their commitment to delivering holistic aged care services to older adults and promoting gerontology to the public.

Prof. Fahriye Oflaz from the Koç University, Turkey visited our School in October 2017. During her visit, she delivered a seminar to share the recent evidence about traumatic stress reactions in clinical settings. Her valuable sharing definitely familiarised our staff and students with recent studies related to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in nursing.

Congratulations to our Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) (MNSP) Year 1 and 2 students, Ms. Man-yin Suen, Ms. Wai-shan Wong, Ms. Hiu-yi Yeung, Ms. Rainbow Ching-kwan Chan, Ms. Bonny Ying Chow and Ms. Jenny Tsz-ying Lau on receiving the ‘Excellent Clinical Performance Awards 2016-17’! It was our honour to have our School Director Professor Sek-ying Chair to present the awards to the students on 11 September 2017. The award is presented to a maximum of three MNSP students of each year to recognise their excellent clinical performance.

Orientation Day 2017 (Professional Diploma Programme in Advanced Nursing Practice)

The Orientation Day for the Professional Diploma Programme in Advanced Nursing Practice was held on 6 September 2017. Our School Director Prof. Sek-ying Chair delivered the welcoming speech to new students; Programme Director Prof. Iris Lee, Chief Year Coordinator Ms. Civy Leung, and Specialty Coordinator Ms. Connie Keung gave a detailed overview of the programme curriculum. One of the special features this year is, in addition to Management and Leadership in Nursing, the programme has introduced three study streams, namely, Perioperative Nursing, Medical Nursing, Oncology Nursing to the programme. This was a great opportunity for the students to meet with the teaching team and classmates from different specialty areas. The School wishes all students a wonderful start to the new academic year!

The Orientation Day for the Master of Nursing Programme was held on 1 September 2017. More than 25% of the students were our graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing Programme. Our School Director Prof. Sek-ying Chair and Prof. Doris Yu, Vice-Director of Research and Head of Graduate Division, delivered welcoming speeches to the new students; and Programme Director Prof. Helen Chan gave a detailed overview of the programme. Through the Orientation Day, the students had the opportunity to meet the teaching team to have inspiring sharing, and to enhance their understanding of the programme. The School wishes all students a fruitful and delightful year!
