Scholarships and Awards Presentation Ceremony 2016-17

This year’s Scholarships and Awards Presentation Ceremony was successfully held on 28 April 2017. A total of 99 scholarships and awards were presented to our postgraduate students in recognition of their outstanding academic and research achievements. Families and friends of the awardees participated in this memorable event as well. Our School Director Prof. Sek-ying Chair, representatives of the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation and the Nethersole Institute of Continuing Holistic Health Education, our donors Ms. Joyce Au and Dr. Irene Wong and many teachers attended the ceremony to support the awardees and share their joy and achievements. The School would also like to extend our gratitude to our donors for their unfailing support over the years.

Congratulations to our BScG graduate of the 1 cohort Ms. Hang-ping Li, and our BScG graduate of the 2nd cohort Mr. Kelvin Tse on receiving the ‘Employee Excellence Award’ and the ‘New Employee Excellence Award’ respectively from a social welfare organization in recognition of their outstanding working performance and professional contributions.

Two BScG graduates were invited to share their learning and working experiences with the BScG final year students on 22 April 2017. Through participating in group discussions, students explored the career prospects in elderly care services as well as the needs of further studies.

The CUHK Long Service Award 2016 Presentation Ceremony

Our Nursing Teaching and Learning Centre Nurse Ms. Dora Leung received the 2016 Long Service Award in the CUHK Long Service Award 2016 Presentation Ceremony on 11 April 2017. Our School Director Prof. Sek-ying Chair joined the event to support Dora in appreciation of her contributions to the School.

Student Development Workshops for Bachelor of Science in Gerontology Programme 2017

A series of Student Development Workshops was held for our BScG students in March and April 2017. Representatives from various elderly service organizations were invited to deliver career talks and share beneficial tips. Students were also deeply inspired by the discussions with the speakers on the future development of elderly services. During the workshops, the certificate of ‘Excellent Gerontological Practicum Performance’ was presented to Mr. Shun-lai Cheng in recognition of his outstanding performance during the gerontological practicum.

Professor Eleanor Holroyd from Auckland University of Technology visited our School from 4 to 12 April 2017. During her visit, she delivered seminars to our staff and students to share her experiences in qualitative research and grounded theory methodology. Her valuable sharing definitely benefited our staff and students in nursing research and research proposal writing.

Teaching and Learning Seminar: Nursing Care Plan Workshop

Clinical practice is a major component of nursing education, integrating theory and practice to enhance students’ clinical competency. An innovative model of clinical teaching and learning is adopted. A nursing team from United Christian Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital and Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital was invited to serve as clinical mentors to supervise our students during the clinical practice. They are clinical experts who are familiarize with the clinical settings and provide guidance to our students with their sound theoretical foundation as well as professional clinical expertise and skills. They also conduct clinical competency assessment to provide feedback on students’ performance during the clinical practice. The School works closely with the clinical mentors to provide students with excellent placement opportunities to support their professional development while carrying on our mission of compassionate care.
To unite the assessment criteria for clinical practice, a workshop was held to share the skills in using the new nursing assessment form and writing nursing care plans to benefit our teachers and clinical mentors from various hospitals.

A delegation of the Austrian Trade Commission comprising 28 political, business and press representatives from Austria visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 31 March 2017. During the visit, Prof. Carmen Chan and Prof. Helen Chan of our School met with 3 of the delegates to explore opportunities for mutual collaborations in geriatrics.

Stroke Awareness Day in Community
26 Mar, 2017

Our teachers Ms Dorothy Chan and Ms Zoe Tsui, and nine Bachelor of Nursing students and seven Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) students joined the voluntary service of Stroke Awareness Day in Community on 26 March 2017 (Sunday) at Kai Tin Shopping Centre, Lam Tin. This activity was organized by the United Christian Hospital in collaboration with our School, Kwun Tong Healthy City and Hong Kong Stroke Society, and co-organized by the Hong Kong Stroke Association and Self Help Group for the Brain Damaged.          

On that day, students provided health check for the residents, and organized a game booth to promote stroke prevention by minimizing risk factors and maintaining healthy lifestyle.

Chung Chi College Photo Day was successfully held on 24 March 2017. A total of 49 BN and 10 BScG graduating students participated in this memorable event with their families and friends. Our School Director Prof. Sek-ying Chair and many teachers also joined the event to support the students and to share their joy and achievement.

Presentation of BScG Badge and Caring Star Certificate

Each of our BScG students will be presented with a BScG badge for wearing during the gerontological practicum and exchange programme for identification purpose. The badge symbolizes their duty of promoting gerontology to the public, and serves as a commemoration of their enjoyable moments studying in CUHK.
In addition to the BScG badge, fourteen students were presented with a‘Caring Star Certificate’in recognition of their exceptional caring attitude to the older people during the gerontological practicum.

BScG Student Exchange Programme 2017

28 Bachelor of Science in Gerontology students participated in the exchange programme to Taipei, Tainan and Singapore in Mar 2017. During the exchange, they visited pioneering aged care organizations and institutions such as Centre for Successful Aging, person-centred residential care home, age-friendly hospital ward, primary health clinic, and mobile clinic for older people. Through observing or participating in the elderly care services in the local communities as well as sharing with teachers and students from the host institutions, the students have enriched their learning experiences. They have also developed cross-cultural insights to support their future development of high quality elderly care services in Hong Kong.

New Asia College Photo Day 2017

New Asia College Photo Day was successfully held on 10 March 2017. Our School has 42 BN and 4 BScG graduating students joining this memorable event with their families and friends. The School Director Prof. Sek-ying Chair and 20 teachers also participated in the photo day to support the students and to share the joy of the students.

Inbound Student Exchange Programme - Oncology Nurses Association of India

Five postgraduate nursing students and teacher from the Oncology Nurses Association of India joined our Inbound Student Exchange Programme from 6 to 17 Mar 2017. During the visit, they attended classes and research seminars with our students, met with our Cancer and Palliative Care Research Group members and our doctoral students and graduates. Moreover, they visited two cancer and palliative care service centres in Hong Kong, and shared with us the cancer prevalence, oncology nursing development and oncology nursing education in India. A variety of cultural activities were also arranged to enrich their cultural experience in Hong Kong.

Promotional Booth on Organ Donation

Our School set up a booth near the MTR University Station for promoting organ donation on 28 February 2017. During the day, our professors, professional consultants, lecturers and student ambassadors provided information about organ donation to passers-by and answered their enquiries enthusiastically. We hope through this activity the public would better understand about organ donation and its importance for life saving.

Tea Gathering with NURSO Presidents

Prof. Chow Ka Ming, Dr. Winnie Tang, and presidents of Nursing Society and six College Societies had tea gathering at Orchid Lodge, Chung Chi College, CUHK on 27 February 2017. During the gathering, the presidents briefly introduced their activity plans in 2017/2018 and shared their interesting experience.
