Our School received Certificate of Commendation for Organ Donation Promotion from the Food and Health Bureau

Our School received a Certificate of Commendation from the Food and Health Bureau in the Organ Donation Day 2018 cum 10th Anniversary Ceremony of the Launching of the Centralised Organ Donation Register (CODR) on 10 November for our efforts in promoting organ donation in CUHK and the community.

Our School has joined the Organ Donation Promotion Campaign and become a signatory of the “Organ Donation Promotion Charter” since 2016. A series of promotional activities on organ donation, coordinated by Prof. Janita Chau and Dr. Helen Chiang, has been organised to allow our staff and students to understand the significance and importance of organ donation, and encourage them to register at the CODR in order to inculcate a culture that honours organ donation in our school and the community.

Congratulations to Prof. Carmen Chan and Prof. Wai-tong Chien on being inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing in November 2018 for their significant contributions to nursing education and research, especially in the areas of palliative care and mental health nursing!

Volunteer Medical Consultation for Older Adults

23 students from the Bachelor of Nursing Programme and the Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) Programme volunteered in an activity on 4 November to provide health check and medical consultation service for around 250 older adults. This meaningful event was organised by the Elderly Healthcare Foundation in collaboration with the Hong Kong Council of Social Service and the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council. The organisers greatly appreciated our students’ performance. Well done everyone and keep it up!

Stroke Awareness Day

The United Christian Hospital organised the Stroke Awareness Day on 27 October at the Lok Wah Bus Terminus Square in Ngau Tau Kok. Dr. Dorothy Chan was invited as an officiating guest to kick off the event. Four Bachelor of Nursing students and two Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) students volunteered for the event to promote stroke prevention and treatment to the public through health check and game booth.

The Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) Programme has used various channels to collect students’ feedback to evaluate the learning activities and future directions of the programme. Programme Director Prof. Janita Chau and Chief Year Coordinator Prof. Aileen Chan met with our graduates Howard Chan, C.K. Chan, Peter Yau and Jennifer Kwok on 16 October and 1 November to collect their feedback on the courses and learning activities of the programme. 

Howard Chan, who is a graduate of 2012 and has recently been promoted to Advanced Practice Nurse in Accident and Emergency Department of the Tin Shui Wai Hospital, thanked all the professors and lecturers for providing students with a comprehensive understanding of ‘holistic care’, and placing a strong emphasis on their professional behaviour and attitude during the clinical practicum.

Dr. Shelley F. Conroy, Tenured Professor and Dean and Dr. Tanya Sudia, Tenured Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship, Louise Herrington School of Nursing, Baylor University, Texas, USA visited our School on 9 October 2018 to meet with our School Director and professors to exchange their experiences on teaching and research. During the visit, Prof. Sek Ying Chair and Dr. Conroy signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen collaboration between the two schools.

Pass-it-on Ceremony 2018

This year's Pass-it-on Ceremony was held on 9 October. A total of 196 Bachelor of Nursing Year 1 students pledged to live up to the spirit of dedication of Florence Nightingale, and uphold the highest ethical standards in serving clients and promoting health in the community. They took an important step to enter the nursing profession.

Cochrane China Network

Prof. Wai-tong Chien, Prof. Janita Chau and a group of healthcare professionals in China joined a meeting from 9 to 10 October in Beijing to discuss the strategic direction of a new initiative, Cochrane China Network. Cochrane is internationally recognised as the benchmark for high-quality knowledge through systematic reviews to enhance evidence-based health care.

Our Year 2 PhD student Eleven Xiao won the Reaching Out Award under the HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund for the 2017-18 academic year, which supported her to attend the 2018 Dignity Therapy Training Workshop from 9 to 11 May 2018 in Canada. This valuable learning opportunity enabled Eleven to enrich her knowledge of psychotherapeutic interventions for terminal ill clients and broaden her international exposure. Congratulations!

Visiting the Older Adults with CUHK Mooncake

The Mid-Autumn Festival is coming soon! Apart from celebrating the festival with their beloved ones, our Gerontology teachers and students volunteered in an activity organised by CUHK · Care on 8 September 2018 to deliver their greetings and care to the singleton older adults living in Ma On Shan. They sent gift packs with “CUHK Mooncake” to the older adults and shared the festival joy with them. Wish you all a happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
