Hua Xia Foundation Workshop for Mainland Nursing Academics 2017

The “Hua Xia Foundation Workshop for Mainland Nursing Academics 2017” jointly organized by the Hua Xia Foundation and the Nethersole School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong was successfully held on 19-23 June 2017. A total of thirty nursing school heads and senior faculty members from different provinces of mainland China gathered in Hong Kong to participate in this workshop. Our School has arranged a series of seminar presentations and discussions for the participants to learn about the healthcare system, specialty nursing development and tertiary education management in Hong Kong. Besides, visits to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, Haven of Hope Nursing Home, Kwai Tsing Safe Community and Healthy City Association. were also arranged for the participants to have a better understanding of the health and community care services in Hong Kong. These visits also provided a valuable opportunity for the participants to share views and experiences with local professionals, contributing to the health and community care development in mainland China and Hong Kong.

Student Exchange: Wakayama Medical University, Japan in June 2017

5 Bachelor of Nursing students participated in the exchange programme to the Wakayama Medical University, Japan from 18 to 24 June 2017. During the exchange, they attended classes with local students, and visited the university hospital, emergency medical services as well as aged care institutions. The students have enriched their learning experiences and developed cross-cultural insights through sharing with teachers and students from the host institution on local health care systems and nursing education.

Prof. Patricia Davidson, Dean of School of Nursing of the Johns Hopkins University, USA visited our School from 16 to 20 June 2017, and delivered a seminar themed ‘Surviving and thriving in an academic career’, and a lecture themed ‘Climate change and nursing’ respectively to our staff and students. Her valuable sharing helped our staff and students plan their academic career, and enhanced their understanding of the impact of climate change on health care outcomes.

Prof. Roger Watson, Professor of Nursing of the University of Hull, UK and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Advanced Nursing visited our School, and delivered a seminar themed ‘From results to publication’ to our staff and students on 15 June 2017. Our staff and students enhanced their understanding of the trends, standards and issues about publishing nursing research via his valuable sharing.

Prof. Barbara Riegel visited the School from 5 to 7 June 2017. During her visit, she delivered a research seminar on ‘Palliative Care in Cardiac Patients’ to share her experience and insights with our academic staff and students.

Graduation Ceremony 2016-17 for our Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration), Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Gerontology programmes was held at Chung Chi College Chapel, The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 31 May 2017. The School has a total of 342 students graduating this year, including 67 Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration), 247 Bachelor of Nursing and 28 Bachelor of Science in Gerontology students. They are going to enter the nursing profession and elderly care field, as well as inherit our spirit of compassion care to serve the community. We wish them every success in the future!

Prof. Hugh McKenna, Dean of Medical School Development of the Ulster University, UK visited our School from 30 May to 1 June 2017, and delivered a seminar and a lecture to our staff and students to share his experience in building an impressive research profile for academic career advancement, as well as building successful REF impact case studies in health science. His valuable sharing benefitted our staff and students in pursuing research excellence.

Inbound Student Exchange Programme - Louise Herrington School of Nursing Baylor University

Twelve nursing students led by a teacher from the Louise Herrington School of Nursing, Baylor University, United States joined our Inbound Student Exchange Programme from 15 to 17 May 2017. During the visit, they attended classes with our students, visited our laboratories and the Nethersole Institute of Continuing Holistic Health Education, and joined a campus tour to experience campus life in CUHK.

2017 International Nurses Day (IND) Celebration Dinner

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on 12 May, the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale every year; and this year’s theme is ‘Nurses: A Voice to Lead - Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals’. Our teachers and students participated in the International Nurses Day Celebration Dinner organized by the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing at the Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre on 13 May 2017, and celebrated the School’s contributions to the nursing profession.

Dr. Raymond Yuen, Physician in Charge of the Hosanna Medical Centre and Medical Consultant of the 365 Cancer Prevention Society visited our School, and delivered a seminar themed "Nutrition approach to Cancer" to our staff and students on 12 May 2017. Our staff and students deepened their understanding of nutrition in cancer treatment by his valuable sharing.

This year’s Scholarships and Awards Presentation Ceremony was successfully held on 28 April 2017. A total of 99 scholarships and awards were presented to our postgraduate students in recognition of their outstanding academic and research achievements. Families and friends of the awardees participated in this memorable event as well. Our School Director Prof. Sek-ying Chair, representatives of the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation and the Nethersole Institute of Continuing Holistic Health Education, our donors Ms. Joyce Au and Dr. Irene Wong and many teachers attended the ceremony to support the awardees and share their joy and achievements. The School would also like to extend our gratitude to our donors for their unfailing support over the years.

United College Photo Day was successfully held on 7 April 2017. A total of 52 BN and 11 BScG graduating students participated in this memorable event with their families and friends. Our teachers including Prof. Apple Cheng, Prof. Ka-ming Chow, Ms. Wendy Chan, Dr. Conny Chan, Dr. Noble Law, Ms. Gigi Ling, Dr. Sally Lo, Ms. Cecilia Sit, Dr. Fiona Tang, Mr. Alvis Kong, Ms. Renee Lau and Dr. Y. H. Cheng also joined the event to support the students and to share their joy and achievement.

Student Development Workshops for Bachelor of Science in Gerontology Programme 2017

A series of Student Development Workshops was held for our BScG students in March and April 2017. Representatives from various elderly service organizations were invited to deliver career talks and share beneficial tips. Students were also deeply inspired by the discussions with the speakers on the future development of elderly services. During the workshops, the certificate of ‘Excellent Gerontological Practicum Performance’ was presented to Mr. Shun-lai Cheng in recognition of his outstanding performance during the gerontological practicum.

Professor Eleanor Holroyd from Auckland University of Technology visited our School from 4 to 12 April 2017. During her visit, she delivered seminars to our staff and students to share her experiences in qualitative research and grounded theory methodology. Her valuable sharing definitely benefited our staff and students in nursing research and research proposal writing.

Teaching and Learning Seminar: Nursing Care Plan Workshop

Clinical practice is a major component of nursing education, integrating theory and practice to enhance students’ clinical competency. An innovative model of clinical teaching and learning is adopted. A nursing team from United Christian Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital and Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital was invited to serve as clinical mentors to supervise our students during the clinical practice. They are clinical experts who are familiarize with the clinical settings and provide guidance to our students with their sound theoretical foundation as well as professional clinical expertise and skills. They also conduct clinical competency assessment to provide feedback on students’ performance during the clinical practice. The School works closely with the clinical mentors to provide students with excellent placement opportunities to support their professional development while carrying on our mission of compassionate care.
To unite the assessment criteria for clinical practice, a workshop was held to share the skills in using the new nursing assessment form and writing nursing care plans to benefit our teachers and clinical mentors from various hospitals.
