Our School Director and professors enjoyed a delightful dinner with local and overseas guests at the Science Park on 10 April. The guests included our Visiting Committee members Prof. Paula Milone-Nuzzo (President of MGH Institute of Health Professions, USA) and Prof. Susan Ruppert ( PARTNERS Endowed Professor in Nursing, Interim Assistant Dean & Department Chair, Acute and Continuing Care, Cizik School of Nursing, The University of Texas Health Science Centre at Houston, USA), local nursing leaders, health and social care collaborators, and representatives of students and graduates.

The dinner provided an excellent occasion for all participants to exchange views on the latest development of nursing and gerontology, to strengthen connections and explore opportunities for future collaborations, and to enjoy the excellent performance of our nursing and gerontology students and exchange students under a cosy atmosphere.

United College Photo Day

United College Photo Day was successfully held on 6 April. More than 70 nursing and gerontology graduating students and their teachers joined this memorable event. After the opening speeches by Prof. Apple Cheng and the graduate representative, participants enjoyed Fa Pao drawing, roasted pig cutting, balloon flying and photo taking to celebrate their graduation. The event marked the end of all College Photo Days in this academic year. Again, congratulations to all graduating students!

Teaching and Learning Seminar: Outcomes-based approach: Implementation of criterion-referenced assessment and development of grade descriptors

Prof. Cecilia Chun, Director of Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, delivered a seminar themed ‘Outcomes-based approach: Implementation of criterion-referenced assessment and development of grade descriptors’ to our teaching staff on 28 March 2018. She discussed the principles of assessment under the outcomes-based approach and illustrated the development of assessment rubrics.

Wu Yee Sun College Photo Day

The Wu Yee Sun College Photo Day was successfully held on 23 March. After the opening remarks by Prof. Sek-ying Chair, the graduating students drew Fa Pao and cut a cake with the teachers to celebrate their graduation. With the brilliant sunshine and clear blue sky, everyone enjoyed the picturesque view of the Tolo Harbour and took pictures at Terrace of Dreams together.

Teaching and Learning Seminar: Workplace safety for healthcare workers

Our Bachelor of Nursing graduate Mr. Ralph Lee, Director of University Safety, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, delivered a seminar on the topic of workplace safety to our teaching staff on 23 March 2018. He discussed workplace safety for healthcare workers, highlighting potential respiratory hazards and necessary protection in the clinical environment.

Visit to Caritas Community Centre – Caine Road

The visit to Caritas Community Centre – Caine Road organised by the Nursing Society‘Nuring’ was successfully held on 18 March. Twenty nursing student volunteers promoted the importance of healthy eating to thirty children from grass-roots families. Through mass games and competition, the children learnt the keys to maintaining a balanced diet, such as choosing food from the Healthy Eating Food Pyramid and healthy snacks.

On 16 March, over seventy SC nursing and gerontology graduating students, dressing in their graduation gowns, and holding blooming flowers and lovely graduation bears, participated in the SC Photo Day. After the opening remarks by Prof. Ka-ming Chow and the graduate representative, teachers and students took photos together and enjoyed the refreshment to celebrate their graduation.

Student Development Workshops

The School held a series of workshops to better prepare graduating students from the Bachelor of Nursing Programme and Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) Programme for joining the workforce. During the workshops, healthcare leaders from the Hospital Authority and private hospitals presented characteristics of different hospitals; nursing leaders from the Nethersole Institute of Continuing Holistic Health Education shared their invaluable experiences; staff from the Department of Health introduced the latest healthcare technology; our School Director shared interview skills; our alumni shared their working lives; and staff from the University Safety Office promoted the importance of occupational safety and health. Through these workshops, we hope to equip our graduating students with sufficient knowledge and skills for job interviews and their future career development.

Appointment of new Student Ambassadors

This year’s training workshop and inauguration ceremony for student ambassadors was successfully held on 10 March. The SAs attended a 2-hour workshop to enhance their understanding of the School, nursing and gerontology profession and education. After the inauguration ceremony, twenty three students were appointed SA. They are CHAN Nga Ching, CHENG Tsz Yan, CHIU Long Yi, LAM Tsz Yan, POON Tsz Ying, WONG Ka Lee, CHUNG Cheuk Ling, FUNG Sin Sze, MOK Hoi Kiu, SUN Yuet Ting, Cheng Hiu Tung, CHENG Hok Yin, HO Ka Yan, LAI Hiu Kwan, LAU Kin Ping, LEUNG Wing Kit, TSANG Yuk Shan, TSOI Yan Chi from the Bachelor of Nursing Programme and; CHAN Hiu Ling, CHEUNG Ki Chung, YING Hiu Lam, LI Sze Wai and TAM Ka Yi from the Bachelor of Science in Gerontology Programme. They, together with the current SAs, will take up the responsibility of promoting the School both internally and externally.

The NA Photo Day was successfully held on 9 March. 36 nursing graduating students gathered at the New Asia Amphitheatre where they celebrated their graduation together with their friends and relatives. Joining our School Director Prof. Sek-ying Chair, 20 teachers participated to share the joy of the students and take photos with them in this memorable occasion.

Academic Staff Visit

Ten academic staff from The University of Tokyo, Japan visited our School on 8 March 2018. During the visit, they met with our school academic staff and exchanged teaching and research experiences. They also visited our school laboratory to explore our teaching facilities. Academic staff from the two schools enjoyed a fruitful sharing and established close friendship.

Gerontology graduate co-founded PaterMater

Our gerontology graduate Mr. Ching-ho Chan jointly founded PaterMater, an elderly-focused social enterprise that supports sons and daughters to address needs of their ageing parents, with an investment analyst and a software engineer in 2016. Mr. Chan fully took the advantages of a gerontology graduate to establish this service delivery model with an innovative approach to fulfil the unmet aged care service needs in Hong Kong. PaterMater set a very good example of applying social innovation and social entrepreneurship in aged care, and won an award and was selected for various schemes from 2016 to 2017 as follows:
•           1st runner-up of Hong Kong Social Enterprise Challenge
•           Selected team for ASTRI Innovation Runway (AIR) Programme
•           Selected team for Accomplish Youth Entrepreneurship Dream
•           Selected team for PolyU Micro Fund Scheme

The 13th World Kidney Day @ Hong Kong

The 13th World Kidney Day @ Hong Kong was successfully held on 4 March. We had a total of 31 Bachelor of Nursing and 6 Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) students joining this meaningful event as volunteers to perform health assessment for the general public in public housing estates to promote kidney health. What a fruitful experience for our students to serve and give back to the community!

BScG Year 2 Student Exchange: Taipei Medical University, Taiwan

Six Bachelor of Science in Gerontology Year 2 students visited the Taipei Medical University, Taiwan and a wide range of social and healthcare settings including hospital, active ageing centre, social welfare centre, public day care centre, centre for geriatric medicine, nursing home, etc. The students gained a deeper understanding of the service and policies for the older adults and innovative practices for service delivery in Taipei, and benefited a lot though exposure to support for aged care service and healthcare facilities which are not found in Hong Kong.

Community Health Check

A community health check, jointly organised by the Nursing Society and the Medical Society, was successfully held on 3 March in Mei Lam Estate, Tai Wai. Student volunteers performed basic health check and provided health consultation to over 400 residents.

The Nursing Society hoped to raise the public awareness of their health conditions and the importance of regular health check through this meaningful event.

Chung Chi College Photo Day

Over 80 nursing and gerontology graduating students, together with their teachers, families and friends, participated in the Chung Chi College Photo Day on 2 March. The event kicked off with the welcoming speech delivered by Prof. Janita Chau, followed by a series of celebration activities, including champagne popping, Fa Pao drawing, roasted pig cutting and photo taking. Students’ wonderful memories were filled with the ripple of laughter spreading around the Lake Ad Excellentiam.

Academic Visit : Trinity University of Asia, Philippines in February 2018

Prof. Sek-ying Chair visited the St. Luke College of Nursing, Trinity University of Asia, Philippines on 27 February 2018, and met with Dr. John Michael O. Lorena, Dean of the College to exchange their experiences on clinical teaching.

BSCG Year 2 Student Exchange: Wakayama Medical University, Japan

Ten Bachelor of Science in Gerontology Year 2 students visited the Wakayama Medical University, Japan and various local aged care settings including home care support centre, rehabilitation hospital, day care centre, housing for older adults, hospital, etc. The students benefited a lot from the exchange activities which inspired them to evaluate and integrate approaches and models of aged care service delivery in Japan to facilitate the comprehensive development of Hong Kong’s aged care services. Special thanks go to the warm hospitality of the teachers and students from the Wakayama Medical University. All gerontology students enjoyed such an unforgettable trip!

Best Essay Award for the GEF Programme 2016-17

Congratulations to our Bachelor of Nursing Year 3 student Mr. YEUNG Yau Tin on receiving the “Best Essay Award for the General Education Foundation (GEF) Programme  2016-17–Silver Award” from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, in recognition of his outstanding performance and achievements in the GEF course “In Dialogue with Nature”.
