Student Exchange:Queensland University of Technology, Australia from July to August 2017

Nine Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration) Year 2 students led by Prof. Aileen Chan participated in the exchange programme to the Queensland University of Technology, Australia from 22 July to 5 August 2017. Through presentations, group discussions, simulation sessions and visit to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, the students have broadened their horizons in the latest development of chronic disease management in Australia in areas of education, research, and nursing practice. It was a valuable experience for them to develop cross-cultural insights, and meet new friends from around the world.

Voluntary Service

9 Bachelor of Nursing and 5 Bachelor of Science in Gerontology students actively participated in the voluntary services organised by The Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council Tung Chung Integrated Service Centre to visit the older adults on Lantau Island on 18 & 29 July and 1 & 5 August 2017. During these visits, students not only presented gifts to the older adults to show their care, but also promoted healthy lifestyle for a happy life. Let us have a look at their smiling faces!

A total of thirty-five secondary students participated in the CUHK Summer Institute and visited our School on 17 and 25 July 2017. Through attending classes and visiting our laboratory, they deepened their understanding of our Bachelor of Nursing Programme and gained a first-hand university experience. Inbound Student Exchange: Holy Angel University, the Philippines in July 2017

Twelve PhD in Nursing Education students led by Prof. Al D. Biag, Dean of College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences of the Holy Angel University, the Philippines visited our school on 6 July 2017. During the visit, they met with our PhD students to share the campus life in both regions.

Hua Xia Foundation Workshop for Mainland Nursing Academics 2017

The “Hua Xia Foundation Workshop for Mainland Nursing Academics 2017” jointly organized by the Hua Xia Foundation and the Nethersole School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong was successfully held on 19-23 June 2017. A total of thirty nursing school heads and senior faculty members from different provinces of mainland China gathered in Hong Kong to participate in this workshop. Our School has arranged a series of seminar presentations and discussions for the participants to learn about the healthcare system, specialty nursing development and tertiary education management in Hong Kong. Besides, visits to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, Haven of Hope Nursing Home, Kwai Tsing Safe Community and Healthy City Association. were also arranged for the participants to have a better understanding of the health and community care services in Hong Kong. These visits also provided a valuable opportunity for the participants to share views and experiences with local professionals, contributing to the health and community care development in mainland China and Hong Kong.

Professor Ruth Taylor-Piliae from the University of Arizona, USA visited our School in June 2017. During her visit, she delivered seminars to our staff and students to share her experience in prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases. Her valuable sharing definitely benefited our staff and students in conducting health care research and writing research proposals.

Student Exchange: Wakayama Medical University, Japan in June 2017

5 Bachelor of Nursing students participated in the exchange programme to the Wakayama Medical University, Japan from 18 to 24 June 2017. During the exchange, they attended classes with local students, and visited the university hospital, emergency medical services as well as aged care institutions. The students have enriched their learning experiences and developed cross-cultural insights through sharing with teachers and students from the host institution on local health care systems and nursing education.

Prof. Patricia Davidson, Dean of School of Nursing of the Johns Hopkins University, USA visited our School from 16 to 20 June 2017, and delivered a seminar themed ‘Surviving and thriving in an academic career’, and a lecture themed ‘Climate change and nursing’ respectively to our staff and students. Her valuable sharing helped our staff and students plan their academic career, and enhanced their understanding of the impact of climate change on health care outcomes.

Prof. Roger Watson, Professor of Nursing of the University of Hull, UK and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Advanced Nursing visited our School, and delivered a seminar themed ‘From results to publication’ to our staff and students on 15 June 2017. Our staff and students enhanced their understanding of the trends, standards and issues about publishing nursing research via his valuable sharing.

Graduation Ceremony 2016-17 for our Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration), Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Gerontology programmes was held at Chung Chi College Chapel, The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 31 May 2017. The School has a total of 342 students graduating this year, including 67 Master of Nursing Science (Pre-registration), 247 Bachelor of Nursing and 28 Bachelor of Science in Gerontology students. They are going to enter the nursing profession and elderly care field, as well as inherit our spirit of compassion care to serve the community. We wish them every success in the future!

Twelve nursing students led by a teacher from the Louise Herrington School of Nursing, Baylor University, United States joined our Inbound Student Exchange Programme from 15 to 17 May 2017. During the visit, they attended classes with our students, visited our laboratories and the Nethersole Institute of Continuing Holistic Health Education, and joined a campus tour to experience campus life in CUHK.
