SPOTLIGHT on Project Milestones

Pai.ACT Project

The Pai.ACT project, led by Prof. Connie CHONG and funded by the Innovation and Technology Fund for Better Living, is set to launch its deep-learning mobile app (Pai.ACT) this fall to provide Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) counselling for parents of children with special needs. The team was invited to set up Hong Kong's first-ever ACT booth at the Junior Quality Education Expo from 9  to 11 June 2023, marking a key milestone for ACT development locally.

 
 

 ‘Age with Good Mood’ Medical-social Collaborative Programme

The ‘Age with Good Mood’ Medical-social Collaborative Programme, led by Prof. Ken HO and funded by the Mental Health Initiatives Funding Scheme (Phase 2), successfully held its kick-off ceremony on 8 July 2023, with a fruitful initial recruitment of over 50 volunteers who will contribute to a reliable network to deliver telehealth services while promoting positive ageing among underprivileged older adults with chronic illnesses in Hong Kong.

This latest edition of Research Profile not only highlights our School’s key research achievements from 2020 to 2022, but also introduces three ongoing high-impact research programmes that showcase our success in delivering practical real-world solutions through knowledge translation while driving impact and innovation at home and abroad.

 
AWARDS & HONOURS
  • Prof. Helen CHAN’s team in collaboration with Endless Care Services, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, won the Excellence in Social Impact Innovation Award by the Hong Kong Management Association for their board game designed to promote advance care planning.
  • PhD in Nursing Year 4 student Mei Sze WONG won the Most Practical Design Award (Individual Category) in the Breastfeeding Room Design Competition co-organised by the Department of Health and UNICEF Hong Kong.
  • PhD in Nursing Year 3 student Tika RANA received a Scholarship Award from the Asian Oncology Nursing Society (AONS).
 
 
SPOTLIGHT on Award-winning Advance Care Planning Board Game
 

The board game ‘Five Tastes in the Grocery Store’, co-designed by Prof. Helen CHAN’s team, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and various community partners, is the first-ever game incorporating elements of Chinese culture for end-of-life care education. The game was recognised with the Excellence in Social Impact Innovation Award at the HKMA/HKT Global Innovation Award Presentation Ceremony cum Innovation Summit on 12 June 2023, validating its notable impact on promoting advance care planning.

COCHRANE HONG KONG
 

The 1st Pearl River Implementation Science Symposium organised by Southern Medical University (SMU) Institute for Global Health will be held in hybrid mode on 13–14 October 2023, with Cochrane Hong Kong as a co-host of the event. The symposium has invited world-renowned experts and editors from two prestigious journals (Implementation Science & Implementation Science Communications) to deliver theme-related presentations. It aims to promote in-depth discussions, expand knowledge, and enhance the dissemination of implementation science in mainland China. 

 

Since July, Cochrane Hong Kong has translated four Cochrane Reviews into Simplified Chinese, which are now available in the Cochrane Library and the Cochrane China Network webpage. Besides, we have posted 24 tweets (18 Cochrane Reviews, four Cochrane Clinical Answers, and two Chinese translated summaries) via Twitter @CochraneNursing

ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE
 

The study exploring genetic variations for helping to identify autistic individuals is currently underway. A total of 22 autistic children from 17 families were recruited for the study. Genetic analyses on their blood samples are currently in progress.

The systematic review on the potential use of decision aids to facilitate genetic counselling has been officially published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing, which is openly accessible for viewing at: https://doi.org/10.1111/jocn.16768.
 

 

The study on brain ageing, conducted in collaboration with PolyU, is currently examining the differences in brain structures among individuals of different ages. The brain age model will be constructed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain images obtained from the 111 adults recruited for the study. Saliva samples will also be collected from the participants for further genetic analyses.
