PAI.ACT™ SHINES ON GLOBAL STAGE

Pai.ACT™, an innovative AI-driven ACT-based stepped mental healthcare app developed by Prof. Connie CHONG (Lead Inventor), Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN (Co-Inventor) and their research team for caregivers of children with special education needs (SEN), is now available in Chinese and English. This app has sparked interest in both local and international markets, earning a spot to be showcased at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (IEIG) on 17–21 April 2024, the world’s largest exhibitions dedicated to innovations and inventions. It was a deeply humbling experience to participate in the 49th IEIG as the only nursing school from Hong Kong. Being qualified for such a prestigious international event and winning the gold medal from it are tremendous honours, underscoring our School’s research excellence and innovative capacity on the global stage.

TRAINING IMPROVES SCREENING UPTAKE

An appreciation ceremony was held on 24 March 2024 to celebrate the remarkable progress achieved by the IMPACT project’s train-the-trainer programme, aimed at promoting cervical screening among the local South Asian female community. With Prof. Winnie SO, Prof. Dorothy CHAN and Prof. Jojo WONG leading, more than 50 local South Asian women were successfully trained as community health workers who were knowledgeable in cervical cancer and access to cancer screening services. These trained individuals could play a vital role in raising awareness about cervical screening, with outreach efforts reaching over 1,000 of their peers, significantly boosting screening uptake by more than 75%.

RESEARCH CENTRES
COCHRANE HONG KONG

The three Co-Chairs of the Cochrane China Network: Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN (CUHK Nursing), Prof. Jianping LIU (Beijing University of Chinese Medicine), and Prof. Feng SUN (Peking University), conducted the 3rd Executive Committee meeting of the Network. on 23 April, in which the future development and 2024 work plan of the Network were discussed and established. In addition, each affiliate centre shared about their recent evidence-based practices and activities.

Since March, Cochrane Hong Kong had translated a total of 6 Cochrane Reviews into Simplified Chinese, which are now available in the Cochrane Library and the webpage of Cochrane China Network. In addition, 21 posts were shared via X (formerly Twitter) @CochraneNursing to disseminate Cochrane evidence, share Cochrane updates and promote upcoming events of the Cochrane global community (e.g., the Global Evidence Summit in Prague on 10–13 September 2024).

ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE

For our genetic study on structural variations (SV) in patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), optical mapping was performed on 25 samples for further analysis. By comparing with a control dataset comprising healthy human sequences and between the patient samples themselves, some potential SV targets were identified. Our next step is to thoroughly validate these potential targets to substantiate our findings. Meanwhile, a systematic review summarising results from similar studies conducted in China is underway. This review will lend more weight to supporting our own study.

For our collaborative brain-age study with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Dr. Manson Fong, a Co-PI from PolyU, delivered a presentation titled "Brain age estimation with convolutional neural networks (CNN)" at PolyU’s RISA Symposium: Brain Ageing, Imaging and Stimulation on 14 March 2024. The study involved training a brain-age model using CNN based on the IXI dataset (comprising about 600 T1 images collected in the UK), which was then applied to locally collected data. It is envisaged that the model’s performance will be enhanced as more training data will be solicited from multiple sources.
