RESEARCH CENTRES
COCHRANE HONG KONG

The 3rd Executive Committee meeting of Cochrane China Network was successfully held on 23 April 2024 via Zoom. Delegates from each affiliate centre presented their work and achievements over the past years and outlined their future plans. The meeting culminated in a significant discussion aimed at enhancing the network's global presence and maintaining regular updates via newsletters. The gathering was marked by robust engagement, setting a positive direction for the network's activities in the coming year.

In the past two months, 70 posts were shared via X (formerly Twitter) @CochraneNursing to disseminate Cochrane evidence and news. In addition to posts originating from the Centre (e.g., Cochrane Clinical Answers, Cochrane Reviews), the shared content also included posts from various other healthcare institutions and journals worldwide, keeping our audience well-informed of global health issues.

ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE

For the project on identifying structural variations (SV) in Hong Kong patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the data analysis for optimal mapping was completed. At least one gene was identified in all samples as a potential target for further validation by qPCR and Sanger sequencing. Concurrently, a systematic review summarising results from similar studies in China was prepared. Interestingly, the studies in our review revealed that the target gene identified in our own project has not been reported in ASD patients in the Chinese population. This confirms that further study on this potential gene is encouraged.

Our collaborator, Dr. Cynthia SIU, delivered a poster presentation at the 35th World Congress Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum (CINP 2024) on 23–26 May in Tokyo. The poster discusses the data analysis of a large, community-based study that recruited over 512,000 adult participants from 5 rural and 5 urban regions of China. The analysis indicates a significant link between stressful life events and sleep disturbance, which in turn increases the risk of depression comorbidity with other mental disorders and medical diseases. It is envisaged that future genomic studies might uncover common susceptibility loci linking sleep problems with other comorbidities, and poor sleep may bolster genetic susceptibility to other medical disease risks.
