A Standout Year for Pai.ACT™

ACTuWISE Limited, under the leadership of its Director Prof. Connie CHONG, the Lead Inventor of the Pai.ACT™ app, has enjoyed a remarkable year filled with recognitions. The team recently received the Certificate of Merit in the Smart People (Smart Empowerment) category at the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2024. With a total of four local and international awards now under their belt, they have solidified their leadership in ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) innovation. Over the past two months, the team has actively participated in various events to showcase their impactful work not only to scholars and experts but also the general public. Notable events included the Smart Healthcare and Nursing Seminar held in Macao; and the InnoCarnival 2024, the 3rd annual Hong Kong Principals’ Forum and the 3rd SocTech Symposium, all of which took place in Hong Kong.

COCHRANE HONG KONG

Individuals with schizophrenia often face long-term challenges that can cause significant distress to their families. Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN, Co-Director of Cochrane Hong Kong and mental health expert, recently published a Cochrane Review assessing the effectiveness of family interventions versus standard care, with the aim of improving mental health outcomes for both patients with schizophrenia and their families. The full review is now available in the Cochrane Library, with its abstract translated into Simplified Chinese, and its plain language summary translated into both Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, thereby enhancing its accessibility and impact.

The “Advanced Symposium and EBM Workshop STAR Hong Kong Forum”, organised by the Institute of Health Data Science, Lanzhou University and the EQUATOR China Centre, Hong Kong Baptist University, in collaboration with several leading organisations dedicated to advancing evidence-based medicine (EBM), was successfully held on 13–14 November 2024. It brought together experts, researchers and students to discuss the latest advancements in EBM. During the event, our Research Assistant, Anna ZHANG, represented Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN and delivered a presentation on behalf of Cochrane Hong Kong, showcasing our impactful work in promoting evidence-based practice.

The 4th Evidence-Based Medicine Translation and Dissemination Competition, launched in August 2024, has received over 200 submissions nationwide. Our PhD students and Cochrane Hong Kong members, who are proficient in Simplified Chinese, submitted three creative infographics for this competition individually and as a team. Their use of engaging imagery and typography effectively transformed high-quality evidence into accessible content for the Chinese demographic. Their entries are currently available for viewing on the competition's exhibition webpage (Entry 1 | Entry 2Entry 3).

ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE

Our research on genetic variants in autistic patients has identified new gene targets in addition to the one we initially identified, suggesting that multiple genetic targets contribute to the aetiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Before drawing conclusions, we need to consider genetic polymorphism and multi-allelic factors. We have identified the association of these new gene targets through PCR analysis as well as optical DNA mapping and sequencing. The manuscript is being re-assessed to incorporate further effects of multiple gene targets and their possible association with ASD. The dissemination of our findings will be sought as a journal publication in due course.

Notably, a recent systematic review by the Centre, published in Genes in August 2024, provided invaluable insights into the genomic structural variations associated with ASD within the Chinese population. The review has achieved an exciting milestone of garnering over 1200 views. The article’s high engagement reveals the increasing importance of its topic in genetic research and highlights its significant impact in the field of “Uncovering genetic causes of neurological disorders." The editorial team at Genes was impressed and has invited us to feature our paper on their website, further enhancing its visibility and recognition.

The Centre’s multidisciplinary brain-age study, in collaboration with PolyU, and UToronto, will be presented at the prestigious IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging in April 2025. Our study employs advanced 3D CNNs to analyse brain imaging data from over 1,700 subjects in the Human Connectome Project, aiming to predict cognitive functions such as fluid and crystallised intelligence. This innovative model not only demonstrates high predictive accuracy but also enhances our understanding of the relationship between brain structure and cognitive abilities, opening avenues for developing clinically valuable brain-age biomarkers.
