An mHealth App to Support Symptom Management among Children in the Early Stage of Cancer Survivorship and their Caregivers

The fight against paediatric cancer entails a challenging journey for both children and their caregivers. While children face long-term physical and psychosocial sequelae from cancer and its treatment, caregivers endure significant psychological distress. To address the unmet needs of children surviving cancer and their caregivers during early stage of cancer survivorship, Prof. Ankie CHEUNG and her research team have developed a user-centred symptom management mHealth app, mitigating symptom burden and improving health outcomes for children at the early stage of cancer survivorship. This app aims to provide timely, personalised, and holistic support by leveraging practical educational resources, gamified elements, interactive videos, real-time nurse consultations, and a chatbot for tailored advice. Looking ahead, the team seeks to optimise app features to enhance collaborative symptom management between children and caregivers during the initial phase of their cancer recovery journey.

The East Asia Cochrane Alliance Symposium 2025 Network Meta-Analysis Evidence-based Health Care is scheduled to take place in Taiwan on 23–24 October 2025. This international symposium aims to promote high-quality health-related research by addressing the complexities of integrating evidence-based decision-making in health care. It serves as a premier platform for global experts and stakeholders in evidence-based practice to collaborate, share knowledge and drive innovation in health care.

Version 6.5 of the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions has been released online. Key updates include significant revisions to Chapter 4: Searching for and selecting studies and its technical supplement, Chapter 10: Analysing data and undertaking meta-analyses, and Chapter 13: Assessing risk of bias due to missing evidence in a meta-analysis. There was also a new technical supplement for Chapter 20 on economic evidence (log-in required). These updates reflect the latest research methods and tools to enhance evidence synthesis and advance best practices in healthcare.

Cochrane Hong Kong collaborates actively with the Hospital Authority's Nursing Services Department to advance evidence-based policies and practices. Two landmark clinical trials, led by nurse consultants and academics of our Centre, are currently underway to generate robust evidence to support the safe and effective verification of nasogastric tube (NGT) placement. The first trial determining the diagnostic accuracy of capnography for NGT placement, is recruiting participants from 39 wards/units in 21 hospitals, covering acute, subacute, convalescent and extended-care settings. Another trial evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of point-of-care ultrasonography is recruiting participants from six community centres and 38 wards across four hospitals, targeting those receiving acute, rehabilitation or convalescent care.

ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE

The project on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is nearing finalisation. A manuscript titled "Optical genome mapping revealed novel structural variations in an autism spectrum disorder cohort”, authored by investigators from CUHK School of Life Sciences, Prince of Wales Hospital and our School, was submitted and is currently under review by the Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal for publication. In addition, our team met with Dr. John LUK of the Hong Kong Children's Hospital on 6 March 2025 to discuss potential future research and teaching collaborations. As a follow-up, we are preparing a research proposal to further extend our research study on ASD genetics.

We have explored the use of advanced nanotechnology to enhance CRISPR-Cas gene editing tools, successfully addressing off-target effects and improving precision in gene therapy. This work is nearing submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Additionally, the Centre supports two microbiology courses (NURS6212 and NURS1701) of the School, providing nursing students with hands-on training in non-invasive pathogen detection and advanced techniques like ELISA. This training has not only enhanced their clinical skills but also deepened their understanding of antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease management. By offering these learning opportunities in biomedical areas, the Centre continues to solidify its position as a leader in nursing education and research.
