Making Their Mark:
ACTuWISE’s Path to Greater Impact

ACTuWISE Limited, the first and only startup in Hong Kong focused on AI-driven Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (AI x ACT) innovations, is making impressive strides under the leadership of Prof. Connie CHONG (Founder & CEO) and Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN (Co-founder & Director). Recently, with steadfast support from ORKTS of CUHK, the ACTuWISE team showcased their impactful work at the 5th Asia Summit on Global Health (ASGH) and the 16th Hong Kong International Medical and Healthcare Fair (27–28 May), held concurrently by HKTDC. Furthermore, at the 2025 Shanghai Centre Launch meeting of CUHK (27 May), ACTuWISE was officially recognised as one of the knowledge transfer projects commencing at Innoport@Shanghai, marking a key milestone for scaling up their AI x ACT mental health solutions in Mainland China. With recent funding from the HKSTP Incubation Programme and recognition as one of the Top 10 winners of HKTDC Start-up Express 2025, ACTuWISE is well-positioned to accelerate its growth and impact in the mental health technology landscape.

Prof. Connie CHONG and her team also successfully hosted their inaugural ACT Forum on 5 June in hybrid mode, attracting over 200 participants on-site and online. Prof. Chong herself served as one of the keynote speakers, alongside three distinguished experts in ACT and Contextual Behavioural Science (CBS), including Prof. Kenneth FUNG (University of Toronto), Prof. Andrew GLOSTER (University of Lucerne), and Prof. Yim Wah MAK (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University). This landmark event offered valuable insights into cutting-edge advancements in ACT and CBS, sparking vibrant discussions on integrating scientific research, clinical practice, and tech-driven nursing innovation in the context of ACT. Building on the success of this forum, Prof. Chong and her team are committed to strengthening cross-border and international collaborations, further generating scientific evidence, and expanding the impact and reach of their AI x ACT innovation.

AWARDS & HONOURS

  1. Prof. Ho Yu CHENG has been selected for induction into the 2025 Class of New Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). RESEARCH CENTRES
COCHRANE HONG KONG

Dr. Karla DUQUE JACOME, Cochrane Geographic Groups Manager, met with Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN and Prof. Janita CHAU, Co-Directors of Cochrane Hong Kong, via Teams on 12 May.  They discussed how Cochrane can support Cochrane Hong Kong in addressing current challenges, expanding its networks, and fostering collaboration with various regional groups. They also explored existing opportunities and future directions for evidence synthesis. The meeting provided us with valuable insight that was integral to the formulation and enhancement of our mission to assist in the creation, application, and dissemination of knowledge to support evidence-based healthcare.

In the past two months, Cochrane Hong Kong has published 18 abstracts and plain language summaries of Cochrane Reviews in Simplified Chinese, and 5 plain language summaries in Traditional Chinese. These are now available on the websites of Cochrane Hong KongCochrane China Network, and the Cochrane Library. Additionally, our Centre has posted numerous tweets via X @CochraneNursing to share the latest Cochrane evidence covering healthcare practices for newborns, children, adolescents, and adults.

A successful research meeting was held with the nurse consultant in gerontology and senior nurse manager of the Hospital Authority Head Office to discuss the progress of our ongoing investigation, which contributes significant knowledge to safe and effective nursing practice. The team also engaged in a fruitful discussion regarding the challenges associated with collecting high-quality data for the development of clinical practice guidelines. Further meetings will be scheduled with the nurse consultants and nurse managers of intensive care units and emergency departments who coordinate data collection across seven clusters of hospitals to verify data integrity and validity.

ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE

The ongoing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) project has achieved a milestone, with the manuscript on novel structural variations by optical genome mapping undergoing peer-reviewed revisions. In addition, a paper co-authored with groups from China and the US on ITGA and ITGB superfamily genes for gliomas diagnosis and prognosis, will be published in NeuroMarkers in June. Utilising gene expression profiling, the authors identified several biomarkers for early gliomas detection. Concurrently, to enrich our knowledge in gene editing, a review manuscript on nanotechnological delivery of the CRISPR-Cas system has been submitted for publication, highlighting cutting-edge advances in innovative gene therapy and precision medicine.

The Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation has supported our two research projects. The first proposal titled ‘Genetic study of autism genes’ extends our work on identifying structural variations in a larger cohort of autistic sample. The second project titled ‘Development and psychometric evaluation of a Nursing Genetic/Genomic Literacy Scale’ aims to develop an instrument that can accurately measure the genetic/genomic literacy of nurses and facilitate the development of precision medical and nursing care.

With the increasing applications of genetic technologies in diagnosis and medical treatments, the Centre strives to enhance the genetic and genomic knowledge of nursing students. Lectures and practical sessions have been incorporated in the teaching of undergraduates and doctoral students for years. The topics range from basic human genetics to advance genome analysis technologies like multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Starting in September 2025, a new genetic/genomic nursing specialty stream will be offered in our Master of Nursing Programme. Students in this stream will complete three genetic courses to fulfil the nursing specialty requirement.
