SPOTLIGHT on Project with Funding over HKD 11 Million

This three-year project adopts an empowerment-based participatory approach to strengthen capacity of both the public and healthcare professionals on promoting the psychosocial wellbeing of older adults through intergenerational relationship building. The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and Caritas Hong Kong are collaborators of this project. The main study outcomes are to enhance older adults’ self-efficacy in self-care planning and health maintenance and digital literacy, thereby improving their health-related quality of life.

AWARDS & HONOURS

RESEARCH CENTRES

COCHRANE HONG KONG

Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN, Co-Chair of Cochrane China Network and Co-Director of Cochrane Hong Kong, called an online Executive Committee meeting of Cochrane China Network in August, with Ms. Tiffany Duque, Cochrane US Network Senior Officer, as an invited attendee. During the meeting, it was decided that an evidence-based healthcare forum, namely Cochrane Network Symposium cum Beijing GRADE Annual Meeting, will be jointly held with the Evidence-based Medicine Centre of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in January 2023.

In August and September 2022, Cochrane Hong Kong translated a total of 15 Cochrane Reviews (both abstracts and plain language summaries) into Simplified Chinese and three plain language summaries into Traditional Chinese, with all the translations now available in the Cochrane Library. The Simplified Chinese translations are also published on Cochrane China Network website. In addition, the Centre actively posted 49 tweets (25 Cochrane Reviews, 20 Cochrane Clinical Answers, and 4 Chinese translations) via Twitter @CochraneNursing.

A Cochrane Review protocol Behavioural family interventions versus structural family interventions for people with schizophrenia co-authored by Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN and Prof. Cho Lee WONG was published in August 2022.

ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE

In the pilot study exploring the genetic variants for identifying children with autism spectrum disorder, subject recruitment and genetic analyses will be conducted in collaboration with Department of Paediatrics and School of Life Sciences at CUHK, respectively.

Another study examining the potential use of decision aids to facilitate genetic counselling is project-end approaching. Literature search and data extraction were completed; and a manuscript reporting its findings is currently under preparation.

Regarding the study with PolyU on Alzheimer’s disease, more brain-age models have been constructed and analysed. The study recruited around 100 participants with Alzheimer’s disease; and data pertaining to their brain activities and behavioural outcomes is also going to be collected and analysed.

Having a follow-up study, Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN and Prof. Mary WAYE are now working together with the PolyU researchers on a new project to examine the genetic factors influencing brain-ageing and development of language difficulties among older adults with mild cognitive impairment.
