RESEARCH CENTRES

COCHRANE HONG KONG

Southern Medical University and Cochrane Hong Kong, in collaboration with several academic institutions in mainland China, successfully co-hosted the 2023 Global Health South Forum: Implementation Science Sub-Forum & The First Pearl River Implementation Science Symposium (PRISIS) in hybrid mode on 12–14 October 2023. One of the nursing forums on the second day was expertly moderated by Prof. Janita CHAU, Co-Director of Cochrane Hong Kong. It featured insightful contributions from four nurse consultants and one associate nurse consultant from the Hospital Authority, alongside Prof. Suzanne LO of our School. This fruitful event fostered engaging discussions on the advancement of global health and implementation science.

Prof. Yaolong CHEN, Dean of Institute of Health Data Science at Lanzhou University, visited our Centre on 10 November 2023 and met with Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN, Co-Director of Cochrane Hong Kong. During the meeting, they discussed potential collaboration opportunities that would contribute to the development and quality assessment of evidence-based guidelines, with a particular focus on those for the nursing field in Hong Kong.

ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE

The study exploring the novel genetic variants among children with autism is currently underway. A total of 22 children from 17 families have been recruited, and their blood samples have been collected for DNA extraction and subsequent genetic analyses. So far, nine of the samples have undergone all analyses.

The Centre previously conducted a cross-sectional survey study to examine the knowledge of genetics and genomics among nursing students and practising nurses in Hong Kong, as well as their attitudes towards the integration of these concepts into their nursing practice. The study has been completed, with its findings published in Nurse Education Today (online access: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.nedt.2023.105773).

The study examining the variation of brain structures with age, conducted in collaboration with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, is also underway. Brain images from 111 participants have been obtained through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and are undergoing analyses. Genetic analyses are also being conducted using the DNA extracted from these participants’ saliva samples, in order to gain a better understanding of whether genetic variations would contribute to differences in brain structure among individuals.
