Pai.ACT™ CONTINUES
ITS WINNING STREAK

The Pai.ACT™ mental healthcare app, with Prof. Connie CHONG and Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN as key inventors, was nominated by the China Inventions Association for showcase at the prestigious Silicon Valley International Inventions Festival (SVIIF) in July, where it won the Silver Medal. This is another global accolade for Pai.ACT™ following its Gold Award at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in April. Besides these two international invention awards, Pai.ACT™ also won an oral presentation first prize at a local Paediatric conference earlier this year. This marks a remarkable tally of three awards in less than a year, demonstrating its exemplary performance in innovative research. In addition, the team was also commended at the Innovation & Technology (I&T) Awards 2024 Ceremony by the I&T Commission, HKSAR.

STELLAR RESEARCHER
ENTERS HALL OF FAME

Prof. Helen CHAN has achieved another milestone in her illustrious career — being officially inducted into the 2024 International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame at the 35th International Nursing Research Congress of Sigma Nursing held in July! This is a well-deserved recognition of her excellence in nursing research and exceptional contributions to the profession. Her research excellence has not only placed her among the world’s leading researchers, but it has also garnered significant funding support. Notably, so far in 2024, she has already been awarded over HK$38 million from Research Grants Council funding schemes and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

RESEARCH CENTRES
COCHRANE HONG KONG

Recently, a spotlight on the impactful Cochrane evidence related work of Cochrane Hong Kong and Cochrane Nursing field has been published on Cochrane.org. This spotlight showcases our strengths and contributions in healthcare evidence production, translation, and dissemination over the recent years.

As part of our ongoing efforts to broaden our impact, we have tweeted 26 and retweeted 190 posts via X @CochraneNursing in the past two months. These posts shared Cochrane evidence, resources, and news, along with cutting-edge research and synthesised evidence from multiple sources.

The 2nd Global Evidence Summit is scheduled to take place in Prague, Czech Republic from 10 to 13 September 2024. This event serves as a unique opportunity, offering a platform and for professionals worldwide to discuss critical issues on evidenced-based practice, global health, social justice, the environment, and climate change.

ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE

A systematic review summarising the types of structural variations (SV) reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among the Chinese population has been submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. Currently, another manuscript reporting our own findings of the SV identified in Hong Kong ASD patients is in progress. In summary, several deletion or duplication sites in the genome were identified in 28 participants. The mutation of one particular gene was discovered at a high frequency. We will report the novelty of this gene in association with ASD. We will also explore the possibility of developing these genetic targets as biomarkers for ASD in the future.

In a project in collaboration with Dr. Manson FONG of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a dataset from the Human Connectome Project comprising 1,838 adults aged 20–100 has been downloaded, and we are analysing the data based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs).

Recently, we have been developing screening and diagnostic methods based on some well-known and novel biomarkers. Two articles were published: (1) a review that summarises the updated research progress of transdermal drug delivery for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, which provides insights into the usage of this delivery method; and (2) a research paper that reports on the effect of aptamer-modified multilayered magnetic beads (Apt@MBs) on the early detection of circulating tumour cells in patients’ blood.
