RESEARCH CENTRES
COCHRANE HONG KONG

Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN and Prof. Janita CHAU, Co-Directors of Cochrane Hong Kong, attended the Cochrane Geographic Groups Directors’ Meeting via Teams on 4 September. Their discussion focused on reviewing and refining the structure and function of Geographic Groups. These updates aim to streamline operations, promote consistency, and ensure geographic groups remain heard, supported, and involved in Cochrane’s evolving strategic goals, as outlined in its “Scientific Strategy 2025–2030”.

Since mid-August 2025, Cochrane Hong Kong has released 8 simplified Chinese translations of Cochrane Review abstracts and plain language summaries. These translations are available on the websites of Cochrane Hong Kong, Cochrane China Network, and Cochrane Library. They cover areas such as anxiety disorder, postpartum complications, iron deficiency anaemia, opioid use disorder, and miscarriage management, providing evidence-based guidance for clinical care.

Investigating Problematic Clinical Trials in Systematic Reviews (INSPECT-SR) is now available. As the first consensus-based and validated tool for assessing trustworthiness, INSPECT-SR enables researchers to detect risks from untrustworthy randomised controlled trials before they are included in systematic reviews, thereby preventing evidence distortion. The tool provides 21 structured checks across four domains:
1. post-publication notices
2. study conduct, governance & transparency
3. text & figures
4. study results

ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE

The ongoing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research has completed peer-reviewed revisions. The article titled "Optical genome mapping revealed novel structural variations in an autism spectrum disorder cohort” has been published in the Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal, Volume 27. The Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Charity Foundation has supported the extension of this research in a larger cohort of autistic samples, with ethical approval being sought for further data collection. For the other funded project “Development and psychometric evaluation of a Nursing Genetic/Genomic Literacy Scale”, ethical approval has been obtained, and the first phase of the project has been completed.

The Centre continues to promote genetic and genomic nursing education through new programme offerings. Since September 2025, a new genetic and genomic nursing specialty stream has been offered in the Master of Nursing Programme. Students in this stream will complete three genetic courses to fulfil the nursing specialty requirement. The courses comprehensively cover topics ranging from genetic nurse clinical training and genetic diseases to frontiers in genomic research. This specialty has also been launched in the Professional Certificate Programme in Advanced Nursing Practice as of September 2025, targeting registered nurses seeking to advance their specialty knowledge and skills essential for leading transformative improvements in precision healthcare.
