AWARDS & HONOURS
Prof. Fiona TANG was awarded the Senior Fellowship of Advance HE, recognising her sustained leadership, and professional excellence in advancing higher nursing education in line with the UK Professional Standards Framework.
Prof. Suzanne LO and Prof. Janita CHAU were awarded the Hong Kong Stroke Society Prize for Allied Health Professionals 2025 in recognition of their significant contributions to stroke prevention and management.
Following the completion of a two-year collaborative study on nasogastric tube (NGT) placement, Cochrane Hong Kong Co-Director Prof. Janita CHAU presented the findings at a meeting held at the Hospital Authority (HA) Head Office on 27 September 2025. Conducted in collaboration with Nurse Consultants, General Manager (Nursing), and Senior Nursing Managers from the HA, this study generated robust evidence supporting safe and effective NGT placement. A presentation was delivered at a conference workshop organised by the Guangdong Nursing Association, and abstracts have been submitted for oral presentations at the upcoming 8th Pan-Pacific Nursing Conference and two other international conferences.
Prof. Janita CHAU and Prof. Winnie SO participated in the Cochrane Leadership Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, on 29–30 October 2025. On behalf of Cochrane Hong Kong at the School, Prof. So presented the centre’s impactful work in advancing evidence-based healthcare for Chinese communities across Asia, including initiatives to produce Traditional and Simplified Chinese translations for the Cochrane Patient and Public Network, broadening participation in evidence generation and dissemination. Discussions during the 2-day meeting were fruitful and thought-provoking, focusing on Cochrane's role in the new information ecosystem. The meeting further strengthened international collaboration among Cochrane groups, including thematic groups, evidence synthesis units, review groups, methods groups, geographic groups, and fields and networks, reaffirming their shared commitment to Cochrane’s strategic goals.
We’re excited to welcome Prof. Ling LI from the Cochrane China Centre of West China Hospital at Sichuan University, along with Ms. Ana Beatriz PIZARRO, Future of Evidence Synthesis Officer from the Cochrane Central Executive Team, to the 2nd Cochrane Hong Kong Symposium. They will join our esteemed panel of international speakers, including Dr. Karla SOARES-WEISER, Chief Executive Officer of Cochrane; Prof. Yaolong CHEN, Dean of the Institute of Health Data Science at Lanzhou University; and Prof. Qin LIU from the School of Public Health at Chongqing Medical University. We look forward to their insightful discussions on interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation in evidence synthesis and knowledge translation. and how Cochrane upholds its leadership roles in generating trustworthy evidence to improve global health.
ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE
Our ongoing project on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is progressing well, featuring a newly redesigned set of questionnaires aimed at decomposing the diverse traits seen in autistic behaviour. These tools help us better understand the phenotypic variations within ASD. By integrating structural variant (SV) data identified from our previous cohort, we plan to investigate possible associations between SV-related genetic differences and specific ASD-associated behaviours. For the project ‘Development and psychometric evaluation of a Nursing Genetic/Genomic Literacy Scale’, the preliminary item pool has been developed. A descriptive qualitative study will be conducted to gather insights from relevant stakeholders to further refine the item pool.
On 12 November 2025, students from the Genetic and Genomic Nursing Study Stream of the Master of Nursing (MNurs) Programme and Professional Certificate Programme in Advanced Nursing Practice (PCANP) were delighted to visit the Hong Kong Genome Institute (HKGI) at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park. A total of 18 students participated in this clinical tour and were very excited to explore HKGI’s state-of-the-art facilities, which contribute to the creation of the Hong Kong Genetic Database. This initiative aims to advance genetic medicine and foster precise diagnoses and effective treatments.
In mid-November 2025, the Centre was pleased to welcome Mr. Peter James B. ABAD, a PhD student from the University of Iowa College of Nursing. His research focuses on communication of genetic information within families, cultural competence in genetics, and professional development in genetic counselling. During his visit, we engaged in an insightful exchange on the significance of genetic literacy among nurses and the evolving role of nursing professionals in clinical genetics, with particular focus on the differences in genetic training between Asia-Pacific countries and the United States. Mr. ABAD expressed his appreciation for the Centre’s advanced facilities, which support genetic research studies within the scope of nursing practice.
