RESEARCH CENTRES
COCHRANE HONG KONG

Prof. Wai Tong CHIEN and Prof. Janita CHAU, Co-Directors of Cochrane Hong Kong, attended the official online launch of Cochrane Athens on 11 July 2026. Hosted by the School of Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the event introduced Cochrane Athens’ vision to serve as a hub for evidence synthesis, education, collaboration, and knowledge translation in Greece and beyond.

The launch brought together representatives from the international Cochrane community, academia and research, healthcare leadership, policymaking, scientific and professional organisations, as well as patient and public involvement. Prof. Charalampos SIRISTATIDIS, Director of Cochrane Athens, presented “The Path from 2011 to 2026”, outlining the centre’s founding journey. Prof. CHIEN delivered congratulatory remarks on behalf of Cochrane Hong Kong and shared our experience in advancing Cochrane’s mission across Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, and Asia. He also welcomed opportunities for future collaboration between the two centres.

Over the past year, Cochrane Hong Kong has released 29 traditional and simplified Chinese translations of Cochrane Review abstracts and plain language summaries. These translations are available on the websites of Cochrane Hong Kong, Cochrane China Network, and Cochrane Library.

They cover a broad spectrum of research areas, including mental and brain health, cardiovascular and kidney diseases, maternal and neonatal care, oncology, nutrition, rehabilitation, and public health interventions. Ultimately, these translation and dissemination efforts improve access to reliable health evidence for Chinese-speaking audiences, supporting evidence-informed decision-making in clinical practice, health policy, and among patients and the public.

ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE

The Centre’s autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research initiative, focusing on structural variants, has officially entered the recruitment phase. Following ethical approval and trial registration, family-based recruitment efforts have been initiated in partnership with local non-governmental organisations. Blood samples are being collected from individuals with ASD and their first-degree relatives to facilitate a comprehensive analysis of structural variants and their potential associations with specific ASD endophenotypes. This phase aims to deepen our understanding of the genetic factors that underpin phenotypic diversity and related clinical features in ASD.

Furthermore, a new research collaboration has been established with Dr. Fanny LAM, Specialist in Developmental Behavioural Paediatrics, in partnership with two organisations that she founded: Bluesky Precision Medicine and the Hong Kong Developmental Paediatrics and Child Neurology Centre. This project will utilise genomic data to explore the genetic features of ASD within a local private cohort comprising approximately 200 patients. Concurrently, efforts are underway to develop and psychometrically evaluate a Nursing Genetic/Genomic Literacy Scale. Interview data from clinical geneticists, genetic counsellors, and nurse managers offer valuable insights to inform the refinement of the item pool, prior to expert review and pilot testing.
