In Good Hands:
Toward a Meaningful Ageing Journey

Prof. Suzanne LO and her team actively work on Hayley Hand Care, a pioneering social enterprise dedicated to providing personalised post-stroke hand care and self-management support services. The company uniquely recruits golden-aged women as trained service providers, fostering meaningful employment opportunities while promoting social inclusion and healthy ageing. Recently, the team participated in the BOC Life 10th Golden Age Expo and Summit (GAES) at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. Through an engaging booth showcase, they connected with new stakeholders and effectively pitched their hand care services, raising awareness about post-stroke hand recovery. The team was also recently featured in an exclusive interview by the Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS) at CUHK, capturing heartfelt stories from both team members and service users. RESEARCH CENTRES
COCHRANE HONG KONG

The 2nd Cochrane Hong Kong Symposium is an integral part of the 8th Pan-Pacific Nursing Conference on 26 March 2026. The symposium will feature three distinguished guest speakers: Dr. Karla SOARES-WEISER, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Cochrane, will deliver the keynote address. Prof. Yaolong CHEN, Dean of the Institute of Health Data Science at Lanzhou University, along with Prof. Qin LIU from the School of Public Health at Chongqing Medical University, will serve as plenary speakers. They will focus on effectively transforming evidence into impactful practice, sharing innovative insights on interdisciplinary international collaboration, and exploring new frontiers in evidence-based healthcare.

The Cochrane Patient and Public Network is a global community of over 2,500 people from 100+ countries, including patients, carers, and health service users. Involving patients and the public in research ensures evidence is relevant, accessible, and truly impactful for making informed health decisions. Patient and public involvement means research is done ‘with’ or ‘by’ the public, not just simply ‘to’ or ‘about’ them. Cochrane Hong Kong ambassadors actively support this mission.

Are you interested in contributing your experience to healthcare research? Join the Network to explore opportunities to get involved and make a difference!

Since mid-June 2025, Cochrane Hong Kong has released 7 simplified Chinese translations of Cochrane Review abstracts and plain language summaries, as well as 5 traditional Chinese translations of plain language summaries. These translations are available on the websites of Cochrane Hong Kong, Cochrane China Network, and Cochrane Library. These translations cover a broad range of healthcare topics, mainly including precision nutrition management for childhood obesity, interventions to improve treatment adherence in paediatric amblyopia and adult glaucoma, anxiety disorder detection, and sleep apnea diagnosis.

ASIA-PACIFIC GENOMIC AND GENETIC NURSING CENTRE

The project titled ‘Development and psychometric evaluation of a Nursing Genetic/Genomic Literacy Scale’ consists of three phases. Phase one aims to generate an item pool. It will be constructed by a literature review to identify relevant articles and guidelines, along with a descriptive qualitative study to gather insights from relevant stakeholders regarding genetic and genomic literacy in nursing. In phase two, the preliminary evaluation of the items will be carried out through expert reviews and a pilot test. Finally, in phase three, a cross-sectional study will be conducted to evaluate the scale’s psychometric properties, ensuring its reliability and validity.

To enhance the genetic knowledge of our postgraduate students, a practical training session in essential techniques will be offered to current PhD students starting this September. This hands-on training will cover the core procedures of molecular genetic testing, including the use of micropipette, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) setup, gel electrophoresis, and laboratory result analysis. Each student will receive around one week of focused training. Through this experience, students will gain a solid understanding of how genetic variations and mutations can be identified via a PCR experiment, which serves to provide valuable insights for diagnosing specific genetic disorders.

On 25 June, Prof. Sek Ying CHAIR, Prof. Mary WAYE, and Dr. Cecilia CHAN conducted a workshop for Targeted Taught Postgraduate Fellowship Scheme (TPgFS) awardees of our Master of Nursing (MNurs) programme. Acknowledging the growing importance of genetics in evidence-based healthcare and research, the workshop explored international advancements in genetic science, its role in contemporary medical practice, and the evolving role of nurses in this field, particularly within the healthcare landscape of Hong Kong. After the workshop, MNurs students participated in a guided tour to the Croucher Laboratory for Human Genomics, where they were introduced to state-of-the-art genetic analysis equipment as well as cutting-edge genetic knowledge and techniques related to nursing. The session concluded with a fruitful discussion among all participants.
