Knowing is not as good as acting/doing; doing is not as good as doing it as naturally as in habit
Professor Carmen W. H. Chan and her team, with members including Professor Chair Sek Ying, Assistant Professor Chow Ka Ming and Dr. JoJo C. L. Wong (Professional Consultant), are committed teachers in the Nethersole School of Nursing of CUHK. They are passionate about nurturing the next generation of nurses to acquire essential attributes and practical intelligence to carry on the mission of compassionate care, and do it as naturally as in habit. They believe nursing education is a profound process of humanistic growth and that requires an emphasis on active student engagement.
Over the past 10 years, the team has initiated many innovative teaching strategies to support active learning and effectively address the challenge of large class teaching. They developed indigenous case scenarios incorporating patient cultures, common diseases in Asia and the uniqueness of the Hong Kong healthcare system to enhance virtual reality learning. To optimize experiential learning, they introduced new electives to strengthen students’ research, cultural and international exposure. Their excellent collaborative work has contributed to the success of the Nethersole School of Nursing in being ranked as No. 1 in Hong Kong, No. 2 in Asia in the QS World University Rankings 2016 for the subject of Nursing.
